Every year from 1977 - 2007, Forest Oaks Country Club hosted the PGA TOUR's Wyndham Championship. It is steeped in tradition as the third oldest event on tour. Annually, the tournament attracts a strong field of the world's best golfers. The legendary Sam Snead won the tournament a record eight times — his last victory at age 52! It's still the record for the oldest golfer to win a PGA TOUR event.
Designed and built in the early 1960’s by renowned architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks Country Club was established in 1965. Initial reviews of the course were enthusiastic and highly complimentary. As a result, the course played host to several prestigious college tournaments. In fact, Davis Love III, who later renovated the course, first played here as a member of the University of North Carolina golf team.
The club was purchased by Nisshin Real Estate Company, Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan in 1989. In July 2002, Love Enterprises and Associates were chosen to reconstruct the golf course to a “Davis Love III Signature Golf Course. "
The course hosts several collegiate and junior events and frequent member tournaments.
